"Yes, I did." Maggie turned back to the sailboat, still rocking on the waves.

"But, Mom!"

She heard Corinne opening her door and stepping out into the family room. "She packed mine, too," she told Sarah. "Mom, what's going on?"

Maggie turned to her rumpled, groggy daughters and tried to hold back her tears. She could do this. She could go back to her stoic facade, the one she'd worn so often when they were growing up, the one that had contributed to who they were today. "I decided to let you both go," she said. "There's no point in keeping you trapped here. Your plane tickets can be changed, and if there's any problem, I'll pay the difference."
